Restoring a Landmark to Its Original Design

Kuppenheimer House

An extraordinary restoration project requiring extensive research and meticulous attention to detail, the “Kuppenheimer House” in the Chicago suburb of Winnetka posed quite a challenge for Hackley & Associates Architects.

This National Historic Landmark was designed by renowned Midwestern architect David Adler and built in 1937 for Louis B. Kuppenheimer Jr., the scion of a men’s clothing empire. The home’s modern-day owners wanted their grand 6,650-square-foot, six-bedroom Georgian-style estate to look exactly as Adler had intended in his original drawings.

Working around conservation easements on the home’s interior, the Hackley & Associates team painstakingly restored unique details, including a silver leaf ceiling in the women’s dressing closet and mother of pearl finishes on the primary suite doors. Outside, they adorned the windows with stunning custom panel shutters, the perfect complement to the home’s painted brick facade, copper roof and ornately moulded downspouts. They also replicated the original garden walls, gates and urns, bringing the entire historically-accurate picture to life.
